Practical Vs. Traditional Uniforms

There are many schools of thought on what type of uniform is more suitable for police work in today's society. Some administrators believe in the older style uniform which typically incorporates a uniform, usually polyester shirt, and pants with a "blood stripe", a duty belt, and the required equipment. Possibly a hat as well. This type of uniform is said to present a more professional image on behalf of the department.

The second school of thought is that a uniform should be comfortable and functional hence, battle dress uniforms or some variation. This uniform is typically more loose fitting, may contain a polo shirt or BDU shirt and pants, mostly a cotton material or blend.

The mail problem with the first type of uniform is practicality. The uniform may look pretty and presents a professional image but it's very hard to move around in. It is especially hard to move in if you use shirt stays (elastic that runs from bottom of shirt to top of socks). Usually these uniforms are costly and must be dry cleaned. The uniforms also are harder to fit from officer to officer (in case of turnover) because they are hemmed to a particular size. The uniforms are also easily damaged by an abrasion or tear.

The second BDU uniform is less attractive looking but much more functional. The uniform has multiple pockets on the pants for holding items and fits looser so it is much easier to move in and is much more comfortable to wear. Although this uniform has a higher routine replacement rate due to the wear of cotton.

All in all we feel the more tactical uniform is better for all around use. What are your thoughts?
