Comment From Reader

The comment - Hey Crapper, Maybe you can help me understand this. A certain administrator at a certain agency put out an agency wide email today. The email stated that all personnel, except courts and schools, would be required to work "bike week" in September. Now mind you, courts and schools were ALSO exempt from last years fiasco bike week duty. Everyone elses schedule has been adjusted so that minimal overtime will be paid, and so that personnel such as cid and admin will work a different eight hour shift than normal on those days, in order to work at bike
week. How come schools and courts aren't having their schedules adjusted so they
may also contribute to this assignment? Especially since they got out of it last
year too. I would hate to think that a certain administrator views their duties
as priority, and not the other units. I mean, it's not like there is much major
crime around here or anything.

Our Response - Okay, so if we are to understand your comment correctly, you are upset because divisions at an agency, specifically courts and schools, are not scheduled for bike week assignments or are exempt from scheduling entirely. We are unaware of any police scheduling for any bike week either in Wicomico, Worcester, Ocean City, etc.

However, if bike week is occurring during the week then our impression would be that a schools division would require the same personnel daily and they have a fixed schedule and a fixed location as so they could interact with the same students daily. Therefore, it would be somewhat difficult to assign them to work during any weekday, especially at the start of a new school year. The same applies to courts if it is a day work assignment, whereas CID and ADMIN have more flexible and mobile assignments

Honestly, crappy as it may or may not be, a department can assign it's personnel however or whichever way they see fit, so long as it is not punitive in nature without due process, as per LEOBOR. This does not seem the case if all of patrol is scheduled. So, unfortunately there really is no other answer then that. For whatever reason they did not see fit to assign those divisions to the special event. We have no idea why except for the theorized answer we stated above.... Sorry we can't be of more help.

Your serious? You are going to complain about this? If this is all you've got,I would love to join your agency!!! My agency changes everyone's schedule everytime the wind blows!!!

Schools would be great for this assignment because all they wanted last year was to not intimidate the bikers including the OMG's. So lets have School's work it and give any evil dooer's a great big hug like they do to the little craps in school that are there only to kill time and keep the BOE's budget numbers up.

Glad to see it is happening at the Sheriff's Office too. Troopers are not allowed any annual or vacation leave during "Bike Week". Leave is denied a year in advance. I agree with crapper, schools and courts must be staffed with the same amount of personell regardles if bike week is going on or not. No room for movement with them. On the other hand road patrol has the most amount of manpower and thus will suffer the most changes.

Unfortunatly, lots of departments are stretched thin like OCPD during bike week. It's just the nature of the beast. So, even though two seperate divisions are not assigned.. we guess that's just the way it is. We really don't have a further response..?

Look to whoever at the Sheriff's office that has started to cry about everything. take a hard look around you. There are no bars on 'Your" windows. No ball and chain aaround your ankle. I hate to see people go, but if Bike Week has frazzled you to the point of airing it out i guess you may have other issues with the agency that you are holding back.

This is no Big deal for the last ten years O.C. P.D. & M.S.P. have bore the brunt. It is our turn in the Barrel. Lets suck it up and save negative post for the big stuff. I just think maybe the Blog is haeding down the wrong road on issues.

I would say put up some ideas on making things better.

I mean come on I have never seen so many hand sanitizers in one building in all my life. I think we cultured the SWINE FLU by killing off all the good bacteria around. LOL Just Glad that certain person did not get a case of the HUGE Hemoroids. We might have Preperation "H" dispensers all over the place. You know that is funny I dont care who you are.

Look give the Office a break on minor issues and use that energy to meet with the people that can answer your concerns. Airing all the crap will surley bite you in the crapper.

Just a turd for you to chew on.

Specialized units have gotten specialized treatment, training Etc.. That is part of the game. Use common sense on this one.

Have a very sanitary day

We agree with the prior poster. This is a very minor issue that is distracting from any more significant issues.

This is not the first year that everyone has been required to work for Bike Week so why the whining now? Sounds like someone's vacation got denied!

I couldn't agree more with the previous post, let's save the bitching to something important. THIS IS NOT important people!

This is indeed a minor, and expected issue. But at some Deparments, Road Patrol supports ALL other units, and NO other units support Road Patrol. That may be a part of why somebody was upset.
If road is short, make a road cop work manditory OT, If another division is short, take one from the road never another division...thats all. And road supervisors have it even worse. If they have an emergency and need off and they are the only one on, out of luck.
Then there is holidays, and weekends such as special events. Of course Road cops at all agency's work weekends and holidays... but if they fall on your time off, they should have off.
Night Time Holidays such as Haloween, Independence Day, and New Years Eve are another issue. If a road cop is off during this time, they must come in early, or stay late. So even if they are off, they can not be with there family to celebrate. But only road cops...No other divisions.
It may be more fair if all employees have to work an occcassional weekend, and one or two holidays a year to even things out.

Luckily I don't have to worry about those things where I work.

Why doesn't the bike week group have to pay for security like every other group, including Schools events and other festivals? Just curious.

Anonymous said...

Great Question or do they pay??
