Departments, in fact any and all work environments, are faced with serious issues and non serious issues. Some comments have been bringing up issues at departments that, respectfully, in our opinion are minor issues.
For instance, the bike week issue or other issues. These issues are in fact minor although they may be a personal irritant. So we will look at some issues and give you our opinion on them:
Bike week issues - Minor. People in divisions that are "fixed" in the sense that shifts do not rotate during the week probably shouldn't be pulled to work a special event because that would leave that division empty. Since they are working M-F they will have worked 40 hours already.. So rotating their schedule is impractical. It is unknown if bike weeks pay for officers or not but, bottom line is, that is not a subordinates concern because it affects nothing at the line level.
Internet connectivity issues - Very Minor. Many departments do not have Internet in their departments. Some departments require Internet for e-mail and other activities but, there is nothing that mandates that a department must provide it's personnel with any Internet connection. So, while we enjoy our readers reading our crap, if the department doesn't have Internet or bans networking sites such as facebook, there is nothing to do about it.
Some things you just gotta suck up and get done. Bike week comes around once a year. It may be a pain the the crapper but, that's life unfortunately. You are still being paid to do a job that requires policing. Unfortunately, this is not a topic we can defend.
