Dealing with mentally unstable people...

Dealing with mentally unstable people or "mentally challenged" people as the Daily Slime would have you believe, is very dangerous in reality. Mentally unstable people, much like people on PCP, may have a decreased level of pain compliance due to their altered state of mind.

These people may act normal one moment and then completely loose it and want to kill you the next moment. The switch that flips in their head can be spontaneous and without cause. It is important to remember that pain compliance techniques to affect an arrest, like pressure points, arm bars, pepper spray, and baton use may have a very limited effect to subdue a combative mentally unstable suspect.

Make no mistake, "mentally challenged" people can harm you or kill you just like anyone else you encounter in the field. Be careful when responding to calls for service involving these types of people. Their impulsive behavior can result in serious physical injury or death to you or other citizens. Case in point, the Virginia Tech shooter who was deemed mentally unstable prior to the shooting, but this this mean he was "mentally challenged"? Obviously not that challenged that he couldn't go out and kill a lot of people.
