Administrative Misconduct?

We received this email from a reader today... Your thoughts?

Dear WicBury Crapper,

Why is it that administration can continue to do as I say not as I do? One of the most obvious examples of this is how the administration at WCSO does this is that they all go out to eat together at salad works or wherever else yet they don't want more that two deputies eating at the same place and flip out when it happens. Eating together is imporant for the shifts because it makes them work better together. People work better in a personal context when they break bread together.

When we asked about this double standard about admin eating together and the patrol guys banned from the practice, they we responded "We don't count." Yet they all wear uniforms like patrol people. So the rules just don't apply to them because they just don't want them to. A citizen can't distinguish the difference between ranked uniform personnel and patrol personnel. This is one minor examples of double standards and misconduct rampant at WCSO. They also have spend lots of money to improve outward image but nothing to improve officer safety or the safety of the community. We still have no long guns and only a very few people have tasers.

New cars are nice but do nothing to enhance public safety. Maybe money should be spent better than to order custom carpets and new dodge durangos for administrators which only drive to and from the office or working overtime at administrators rates when a deputy can do the same work for much much less. The majority of the deputies are miserable when coming to work each day but admin does nothing to change anything because plainly they just don't care about their personnel. Moral is the employees problem. When their employees fall on hard times or are having possible issues they just don't care. No personnel management skills whatsoever.

Also, to all those who credit the agency with getting new chargers with "Seized Drug Money"... Who do you think seized it? Deputies working the road, not any of the administrators. Some of those deputies were punished and transferred for personal reasons rather than personnel reasons. They were doing their job with no issues or problems, seizing money for WCSO to buy the new cars and durangos for admin.

Well, we agree that people work better together when they can sit down and eat together. It supports good shift moral. Double standards are totally unacceptable and reduces moral. Moral is an important part of every agency because it is directly linked to productivity. Rewarding only those who are "liked" is a big mistake.

Administrators should have some benifits because frankly they earned them somehow (is the theory anyway). But, many of them take it to an extreme and think they are "untouchable" or beyond the view of the common road cop. Both also very bad and corrupt. Moral, by far, is not an employees problem. It is a direct problem of the agency. Moral is not soley dependant upon pay. Moral is a combination of pay, treatment by admin, work hours, work ethics, leadership, team work and other various factors. Much is which is lacking on many eastern shore departments.

There is no doubt that the seized drug money is made by deputies alone. However, admin takes credit for road patrol efforts. Standard Op Procedure, especially for an elected person.

We were unaware of the extent of the problem within the agency until we kept getting e-mail after e-mail from personnel working. In fact, we get more e-mails from WCSO personnel citing problems and issues than any other agency. We try to address all the problems. We appologise if we skipped some people in responding.

If it's any consolation to the deputies, we the people know it is those guys pulling these cars over making the arrests. I think the reason everyone says "Mike Lewis" is because we all know his name, we don't know the names of the guys making the actual busts. Sorry deputies, the blame falls on we the people as well.

I'm also sorry to hear of the double standard, I thought things would change when Mike took over.

Well its not awful but its pretty bad over here. When you got guy drinking and driving and flipping out something is very wrong. I can confirm that moral is terrible. The only reason people aren't leaving is the economy.

Its not that bad there come on. I've been there almost ten years and its never been better. Quit your belly aching and do your job!

Yeah, tell that to the guy that got transfered to courts. I've been there a significant amount of time myself and it's a horrible place to work. Everybody I know hates it. Four people I know are looking to go somewhere else, five including myself! What's good about the place besides the pay and a car? What has improved? Nada. Same snake, different head.

HA! Okay admin! Go back to sleep, you'll need it for all the people you have to mess with in the morning.

Cry baby!! You go to work and get your fat little check, yet bitch. You got a take home car, yet bitch. If you checked into the agency prior to hire, you would have known it's always thrown it's people under the bus; like MSP, OCPD, FPD, and SPD. That is the ONLY way leaders in LE in the area know how to lead. It hapens all the time, great guy gets promoted, groomed from above and becomes a Dick; or some are instant after promotion. Others are dumb as shit yet hold the rank and EXPECT respect. RESPECT is earned!! Screw with them, take pictures and submit them to a local blog, stuff like that.

If I may be so bold, what change is anyone suggesting be made? To whom are these suggestions being presented? Are these suggestions being made without attitude? Is it possible to meet with Sheriff Lewis and air your complaints while offering suggestions to resolve the cause of the complaints? Of course, this would have to be done in a calm civil manner. Nothing is accomplished in anger. I'm just sayin'

The Sheriff did visit almost every shift and division and from what i hear people started speaking freely but most Deputies feel that Capt or Chief shut it down. I know for a fact that people have talked honestly to the Sheriff and he knows members of his administration have lied to him and then the lower guy lost. The Sheriff showed no integrety or morals in more than a few cases.

The eating together policy is one that is held by all of the local agencies. Its not about not wanting everyone to eat together. It is about public safety and having most if not all of the counties deputies in one spot. How well does that work if all of you are at Denny's on night shift and a major call comes out somewhere on the outskirts of the county. How about a retalitory strike against leos. Makes it real easy if all of you are in one spot. There are bigger issues. Choose your battles this is not one that you should be bitchin about.

so your saying it okay for 4-5 admin to eat together? what about a retalitory strike and they are the ones targeted? there goes all the admin in place. things that make you hmmmmmm. so should it be no one gets the privalige to eat with more than one other fellow officer at a time for the safety factor?
