Possibly, but lets take a look at what corruption means. Corruption can mean everything from taking money inappropreatly as bribes to "do as I say but not as I do" or taking advantage of positions because of a total lack of accountablility. Thats where we come in.
Say what you want about blogs and media, and we freely admit we are just another crappy blog, but blogs do have increasing infulance on matters of significance. Case in point, it is probably a good bet that the previous mayor of Salisbury did not bid for reelection due to the efforts of Joe Albero, either good or bad. Joe's blog had an effect on a political outcome. This crappy blog is designed, by our own admission, to rally peon patrol personnel into a higher sense of camaraderie and belonging and to resist increasing inane administrative pressures on them. Police work in general is a tough job. Cops work rotating shifts which leads to a completely screwed up sleep schedule, have to deal with assholes on the street, deal with the threat of serious physical injury or death on every call or traffic stop, and then on top of all of that, have to deal with a crazy amount of e-mails, memos, transfers, reassignments, shuffling of personnel, and other administrative tactics to suppress a perceived challenge to their span of power and control.
Corruption Breeds in Unaccountablity
As we discussed in previous articles many administrators engage in activites that their subordinates would recieve repremands for. This in and of itself is corrupt behavoir because it teaches administrative personnel that they are not held accountable for thier own rules. Further, it grows decent umongst the ranks like a cancer that eats away at the organization as a hole. When people are not accountable for what they do they become more corrupt. Corruption is not just defined as the taking of money or etc. It is a moral standpoint and outlook. That is where we come in. We patrol the areas that are unmonitorable and unenforceable by most higher echalon administration because they tend to look the other way when their subordinates, lower escholn administrators, get away with violations of policy or practice personal abuses of agency time. So keeping in line with this topic, this week we pose the following questions:
- Ever notice how some administrators use special assignments as overtime opportunities? Administrators already get paid much more money than line personnel. Why do they get to work overtime assignments when utilizing line personnel would be substantially cheaper to the overtime budget?
- Why do some administrators feel they have to suppress personnel constantly?
- Why do some administrators only take care of personal friends, political allies, or ass kissers but never the hard working peons.
- Do your administrators support you in your efforts?
- Do your administrators support you in efforts to enhance public safety?
- Why are people shuffled around routinely?
- Why do some administrators lack true personnel skills? Have these administrators been schooled on how to interact with subordinates? How many classes have they taken on personnel management and Total Quality Management?
- Why do some administrators only feel comfortable berating others?
- Why is the schedule so hard to keep straight?
- Why is there a lack of personnel allocated where needed for public safety?
- Why do certain people get newer cars or equipment while peons constantly get crapper cars and no equipment?
- Why do certain people get recruited for overtime opportunities that are not publicized to all personnel or peons?
- Why won't they just leave us alone?
- Why do certain people get training while others are ignored or end up with lousy training.
- Why are some peoples requests for leave more readily approved than others?
Again this corruption breeds because it continues unchecked. If you know of situations occurring within your agency we encourage you to voice your opinion to not allow this type of behavior to continue unchecked. Your voice = Power. Voice has the ability to change the continuing unethical behaviors in agency administration. This is because it is an embarrassment when made public, such as in this setting. The more people view this blog, the more line cops view this blog and come together on issues, the more span of unethical control and abusive tactics weaken. Get pissed off. Attend your local union meetings. Gain power from oppression. The first amendment was designed to allow citizens to voice their opinion about government. Get the attitude: Screw with us unusually, we screw with you politically.
Origin - "Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely
This arose as a quotation by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, first Baron Acton (1834–1902). The historian and moralist, who was otherwise known simply as Lord Acton, expressed this opinion in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887:
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."
Another English politician with no shortage of names - William Pitt, the Elder, The Earl of Chatham and British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1778, is sometimes wrongly attributed as the source. He did say something similar, in a speech to the UK House of Lords in 1770:
"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it"

I dunno but look into the case history of the Tapman girl. Whose campaign did her daddy contribute to? Who called in a favor to the States Attorney? Who dropped the DWI charge? Why was the Deputy never consulted? HMMM.
And, if you all eat together you will be in big trouble. Excuse me while five of my closest admin buddies and I take a three hour lunch to discuss football.
This is a basic lesson in business 101. When you allow ass kissers, friends, and family to run your business it will fail. The days of not recognizing those who work for a living are long over with.
It is sad that an elected official does not hear the voice of 100 sworn, but only the voice of five. Pretty damn stupid. Lets keep it real. There are asstes and liabilities. This goes for the troops. There are some that work, treat the command with repest, know the job, treat the public with respect. Those are true assets. Then there is the crerw that stis around crying, no stats, look like shit, stabbing one another in the back. They my brothers in blue are liabilities.
The fact is the Admin needs the best people in the best position. If the Sheriff, Chief, etc.. Keeps him or herself surrounded by "yes men" that leader will fail. No one is so strong as to not need good guidance from within. On that note an admin that hides facts from the boss, Lies on those they fear is as corrupt as those we pursue. They are held to the same standard we are all held to. Do the right thing no matter how painful.
If a leader leads by fear, a true solidier will without doubt overcome the fear and the leader is now totally inept.
Also keeping it real. If you have a troop that is so injured they can not work due to one pain or another. They should not be lifting coolers full of ice into a truck, digging holes with a post hole digger and anything like that. At the local bar getting drunk while your group is out risking thier lives. That is what scheduled leave is for. Just food for thought. That turns admin against the troops. It is a two way street. We have to police ourselves. If we dont the public surely will.
That also goes for those who beat suspects while in cuffs. You are a puss no other word to describe it.
I regress let me get back to the point. Ahhh Admin. they need to keep it real. There should be nothing more valued that a human being.i.e. the troops. The material things are just that. They will be here forever. That soldier fighting the war on crime is here for a brief second. The inability of an agnecy to see an employee who is stuggling menatlly is a total lack of concern.
I know of two great officers that are either out or on thier way out, because the admin at one local agency refused to care enough to intervien in a timely matter. The hue and cry was sounded but fell on deaf ears. The paradighm "Hell I shot and killed ten in qui fung and I am O.K." does not apply. I one worked six days without sleep. I am o.k. Well it is not abut you. At that moment as a leader it is about the officer that is in trouble and struggling. The inability to accept that some will fail where others have suceeded is a huge liabilty by leadership.
On that note just let me say to all of you that do this wonderful job and I mean that. There is no greater job on earth. You are the chosen, who risk it all for others. That my brothers and sisters is true courage. Keep up the fight and look out for one another. It is a jungle out there.
Also keep in mind there has to be those that keep the machine running. Dont be hater of those in the building that have a real job. To the brass of all the local agencies. If it is not your goal to get your men and women home mentally and physically safe day in and day out then you have failed them and yourself. The public is our objective. Keeping ours safe is our goal.
Congrats to DFC COOK and other winners.
